The focus of this year’s Mental Health Awareness week is connecting with nature. During the past year, there have been many articles and features highlighting the impact the COVID restrictions have had on Mental Health. It is now widely accepted that, like the Virus, mental illness is no respecter of status, gender, race or wealth. Politicians, Royalty, school children, church ministers; it does not matter who you are. Everyone is vulnerable.

While there is no panacea that will help every sufferer there is considerable evidence that being out in the open air is beneficial. Whether it’s a walk through a local park, a riverside walk or a trip to your favourite beach, getting outdoors is good for the soul!
And keep your eyes open, you might come across something unusual. Maybe a rare plant, an unusual tree, a fossil, a polished stone or the sculpture of a giant horse’s head being erected in the RHS gardens at Wisley. Peter Foy was recently walking through the gardens when he came across a group of workers erecting this sculpture. At the time Peter took the photo, no nameplate had been affixed to the plinth. But surely it has to be called, “The Godfather”!
