Anita Switon, Just Recruitment’s Senior Payroll Clerk, recently went to visit her family in Poland. Through the pandemic, it was impossible for Anita to make regular visits home and she, and her family, were looking forward to a reunion with their Polish relatives.
What should have been a joyful holiday changed when Putin took the appalling decision to invade Ukraine. When she returned to work earlier this week I asked her about her trip, and how the people of Poland were reacting to the crisis. I was knocked back by the emotional power of her response. I asked her to put her thoughts into writing so that we could share them through our Social Media channels.

“I have been thinking about what you have asked me, and it is difficult to put words to my thoughts. All the thoughts bring nothing but tears. What is happening in Ukraine is a nightmare, but my heart swells when I think how brave they are. I am proud of them and pray for them daily. The Polish nation has united to help refugees. Not only the ones that are in Poland now, but also the ones that are waiting in queues in Ukraine. Food and medicine are being delivered to Ukraine. The number of good-hearted people who have come to the Polish border is unbelievable. They come from all around the country with donations and they take Ukrainian families with them to their homes. My own family is preparing to receive refugees as guests. Other people, ordinary Polish men and women, stay at the border to provide food, drink, blankets and any other necessary stuff. It is amazing to witness. They left their homes and work to be there; to help. As Ukraine is fighting - They don’t only fight for their country, they fight for Europe. Since the invasion started life is different. People die every day, innocent people. Putin’s army is killing innocent people, including children. Bombarding homes and administration buildings. In the name of a sick dream of a sick person. I don’t think there is as much information in the UK about what is happening. Personally, I can’t think about anything else. It is like nothing really matters anymore. There are tragedies happening that we hear about every day: earthquakes, tsunamis etc., but we don’t have any control over this. War is a different thing. People do that to people.

Anita is right, what happens in Ukraine today touches us all.
There is very little that we can do, but if you want to help then you might consider supporting the UNICEF appeal. https://bit.ly/Just4Ukraine
