Production Operator

About the role

Just Recruitment is recruiting for a Production Operator for a specialist manufacturer based in Clacton, Essex.

This role will involve setting and operating production lines and compounding equipment to agreed schedules.

Working hours:
4 on and 4 off 12 hour shifts (7.00am to 7.00pm / 7.00pm to 7.00am).

Key tasks will include:

  • Select, check and apply the correct material recipes and equipment set-up conditions.
  • Operating multiple logic-controlled machines (Extrusion, Slitter, Sheeter, Stretcher and more).
  • Carry out grade changes and periodic equipment cleaning to the required standards in a safe and timely manner.
  • In accordance with procedures, make necessary changes to set-up conditions and or recipe to maintain both quality standards and target output rates.
  • Periodically undertake full stripping and cleaning of extrusion equipment and other related plant as required.
  • Undertake visual inspections and first-line maintenance tasks within the scope of the role.
  • Monitor feed stock levels and ensure sufficient material to maintain production.
  • Loading and unloading goods, using Fork Trucks, Grab Trucks, and Pedestrian Operated Lift Trollies etc..

Responsibilities include:

  • In accordance with Quality Control procedures, perform timely checks, taking appropriate action to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Record equipment set-up conditions at specified intervals and immediately act on or notify of any deviation from standard.
  • Monitor and accurately record production data.
  • Complete production records, quality charts and events logs.
  • Enter production and quality data into a computer-based system in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Accurately record reel start and stop times, assigning correct levels of downtime to the relevant attributable causes.
  • Produce and attach reel identification “Bar Code” labels, ensuring all data is correct.
  • Use the computer-based system to dispatch reels, prior to loading onto a lorry.

  • CIPS level 4 achieved or prepared to undertake.

  • Ability to develop and maintain commercial awareness, internally and industry-wide.
  • A proactive approach with a “can-do” attitude and ability to motivate others.
  • Analytical skills, with strong problem-solving ability.
  • Proven negotiation skills.
  • Good understanding of supply chain procedures.
  • Proven advanced level of Computer literacy - Microsoft Excel/Word/Access.
  • Sound Administrative experience.
  • Knowledge of ERP.

The key purpose of this role is to:

  • Lead and implement all the necessary guidelines to manage the overall Hygiene inside the site.
  • Activate all necessary levers to guarantee and monitor hygiene levels, according to the standard defined, in compliance with all the standards of Health & Safety and Food Safety in the food industry.
  • Ensuring that all hygiene personnel are adequately trained.

Key duties include:

  • Deliver auditing functions and corrective action programs around the management of the contracted hygiene team to ensure the daily cleaning of all areas is done in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Plan and implement deep cleaning and overhead cleaning schedules, working closely with the Engineering and Production requirements.
  • Manage the Hygiene Team, ensuring correct levels of staffing and training.
  • Provide the highest possible hygiene standard and food-safe environment for the site and its customers.
  • Manage the ordering and stock control of hygiene consumables and chemicals.
  • Manage the hygiene budget and ensure all expenditure is authorised and recorded.
  • Maintain detailed cleaning instructions and schedules for every hygiene activity that meet the requirements of the BRC food safety standard.
  • Manage the provision of hygiene chemicals and dosing equipment on site - to include regular reviews with chemical supplier, periodic chemical dosing checks, maintenance of equipment and to oversee the safe storage, decant, transport and use of chemicals on site.
  • Be responsible for the effective delivery of the site laundry service.
  • Monitor ATP, environmental and allergen swabbing results for corrective actions and improvements.
  • Provide training and awareness for all hygiene and waste handling staff in all procedures relevant to their role.
  • Ensure achievement of KPI targets.

Audit and documentation requirements:

  • Conduct compliance audits/inspections of internal hygiene standards and documentation.
  • Write work instructions and hygiene procedures.

Health and safety requirements:

  • Control COSHH management and associated training across all functions.
  • Ensure all hygiene staff are trained and competent in all procedures relevant to their role.
  • Ensure material safety data sheets for all chemicals used on site are maintained, updated regularly and are accessible to all staff.

Key role requirements:

  • Professional and proven experience of managing and leading a hygiene team in a food manufacturing environment.
  • SAP knowledge.
  • Knowledge of cleaning systems and methodology.
  • Highly motivated with good organisational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • HACCP (Intermediate).
  • COSHH.
