Feeling stuck in your career? Here’s how to take the next step
Do you feel like your career has stalled? Perhaps you’re no longer enjoying your role, you’ve stopped learning new skills, or you’re unsure what your next step should be. You’re not alone.
Research from Nottingham Trent University found that nearly half of UK workers had considered changing jobs in the previous year. However, concerns about finances, job security, age and whether their skills would transfer were among the factors holding people back.
For some people, a lack of opportunities to develop new skills or progress within their current organisation can leave them feeling stuck. So, what can you do if you feel your career has reached a standstill?
Take a step back
Before making a change, think about what is actually making you unhappy. Is it your role, salary, working environment, lack of progression or work-life balance?
You may find that a conversation with your current employer could open up opportunities for training, additional responsibilities or progression. If those opportunities aren’t available, it could be time to explore what else is out there.
Don’t underestimate your experience
Changing career doesn’t necessarily mean starting again from scratch. The skills and experience you’ve built throughout your working life can often be transferred to a new role or industry.
Communication, organisation, problem-solving, customer service and leadership are just some of the skills employers value across different sectors.
