How to improve your daily commute

Whether your journey to work takes 15 minutes or over an hour, commuting can have a big impact on your mood, productivity and work-life balance. With flexible and hybrid working becoming more common, many professionals are reassessing what they want from their working life, including how much time they spend travelling to and from work.

If your commute is becoming stressful or tiring, these simple tips could help make your journey more enjoyable.

Start your day a little earlier

I know, it sounds counter-productive, but getting up earlier can give you that extra boost of energy in the morning. Waking up earlier will give you more time to prepare for the day ahead, leaving you less stressed and making your early-morning commute much more leisurely!

Get moving before you leave

Along with waking up earlier, try to fit in a quick workout or a short walk. Exercise and fresh air can do wonders for your energy levels in the morning, releasing endorphins, boosting your energy levels, and helping you feel more alert before setting off for work.

Fuel your body

Skipping breakfast or relying on just coffee can leave you feeling hungry and lacking energy before lunchtime. Instead, choose a breakfast that includes protein and fibre, such as porridge with fruit, eggs on wholemeal toast or Greek yoghurt with berries. A balanced breakfast can help keep your energy levels steady throughout the morning.

Make your commute more enjoyable

If you drive, create a playlist or listen to a podcast or audiobook that interests you. If you travel by train or bus, your journey could become the perfect opportunity to catch up on reading, learn something new, or simply relax before work. Choose audio that helps you stay calm and focused, especially when driving.

Don’t let traffic get the better of you

Heavy traffic and unexpected delays are frustrating, but arriving stressed won’t improve the situation. Simple breathing techniques or mindfulness exercises can help you stay relaxed if your journey doesn’t go to plan. Leaving a little extra time can also reduce the pressure of worrying about being late.

Consider flexible working

Many employers now offer flexible hours or hybrid working. If this is available to you, adjusting your start and finish times may help you avoid peak traffic, shorten your journey and improve your work-life balance. If you’re looking for a new role, it’s worth considering employers who offer flexible working arrangements as part of their employee benefits.
