How to deal with professional envy

Feeling envious of another’s success? Here’s how to deal with those tricky emotions in a constructive way.

As anyone who’s experienced professional envy knows, it can be hard to stomach when a colleague receives praise, a promotion, or recognition, especially if it feels undeserved. But while the feeling is natural, how you respond to it is what really shapes your career.

The key is to pause and challenge your assumptions. In many cases, we only see a fraction of what others contribute. The colleague you think has been favoured may have been quietly delivering consistent results, building strong relationships, or taking on responsibilities you haven’t seen.

Rather than letting frustration build, channel that energy into reflection. Ask yourself: what specifically triggered this feeling? Is it pay, progression, visibility, or responsibility? Identifying the root cause turns vague resentment into something you can actually act on.

From there, focus on practical next steps. Request feedback from your manager and ask what skills or achievements are needed to reach the next level. Look for opportunities to develop those areas, whether through training, shadowing, or taking on new projects. Small, consistent improvements are far more effective than reacting emotionally in the moment.

It’s also worth recognising when your environment may not be the right fit long-term. If you consistently feel overlooked despite strong performance, it may be time to explore new opportunities where your skills are better aligned and more clearly valued, but only after careful reflection, not frustration.

Above all, professional envy can be reframed as information: it highlights what you care about in your career. Used well, it can become a useful signal for growth rather than a source of resentment.
