The Just Recruitment guide to video interviews

Video interviews are now a common part of the recruitment process. Whether you’re speaking to an employer live or recording your answers in advance, a little preparation can help you make a great impression. Here are our top 10 tips to help you feel confident and perform at your best.

1. Maintain eye contact

Try to look at the camera when you’re speaking, as this helps create a sense of eye contact. It’s also natural to look at the interviewer on screen while they’re talking, so don’t worry about keeping your eyes fixed on the camera throughout.

2. Smile naturally

A friendly smile can help you appear approachable and enthusiastic. You don’t need to smile constantly; just be yourself, respond naturally and let your interest in the role come across.

3. Be aware of nervous habits

It’s completely normal to feel nervous before an interview. Try to avoid repetitive movements, such as tapping your fingers or fidgeting, which may distract from your answers. Keeping your hands relaxed and taking your time can help.

4. Stay calm

If you feel nervous, take a breath and pause before answering. You don’t need to rush your responses. If you lose your train of thought, it’s fine to take a moment to collect yourself before continuing.

5. Check your posture

Sit comfortably with your back straight and your shoulders relaxed. Good posture can help you look engaged and confident. Position your camera at roughly eye level so the interviewer can see you clearly.

6. Choose a professional username

If you’re using a video platform, check your display name before joining the interview. Use your own name rather than a nickname or informal username, and make sure your profile picture, if visible, is appropriate for a professional setting.

7. Check your technology

Test your camera, microphone and internet connection before the interview. You don’t need an expensive webcam; a built-in camera is usually sufficient if the picture is clear. Good sound and lighting are just as important as video quality. Make sure your device is charged and you know how to access the interview link.

8. Set the scene

Choose a quiet, tidy space where you’re unlikely to be interrupted. A simple background helps keep the focus on you. Make sure your face is well lit, ideally with light in front of you, and close unnecessary apps and notifications. Let others in your household know you’re interviewing.

9. Dress appropriately

Treat a video interview as you would an in-person meeting. Choose clean, professional clothing that’s suitable for the role and company. Dressing appropriately can help you feel more confident, even when you’re interviewing from home.

10. Practise beforehand

Practise answering common interview questions aloud and prepare examples that demonstrate your skills and experience. Research the company and the role, and think of a few questions you’d like to ask. Before the interview, test your setup and join in good time. If you’re recording answers in advance, check the instructions carefully and make sure you understand any time limits.

Remember: preparation is key. Video interviews can feel different at first, but with a little practice and the right setup, you can show an employer what you have to offer.
