Five things to do after the job interview

So, you’ve prepared for the big interview and nailed it. Should you breathe a sigh of relief and forget about it until you receive a call from your recruiter? Hint: the answer is no!

Are you confused about what you should do next? Don’t worry – we have a handy checklist for you to follow, to help you give yourself the best chance of landing the job of your dreams.

1. Refuel

If you’ve been through a long, adrenaline-inducing day of interviews, you have probably forgotten to eat. Reward yourself for your hard work by having your favourite snack (I would always go straight for the cookie dough). You’ve earned it, and your blood sugar level will thank you, too.

2. Write down all the important points

The interview might be fresh in your memory now, but after a night’s sleep, you might start to wonder exactly what the interviewer told you about the role. Jot down everything you remember from the interview as soon as you get home, whilst eating your well-deserved snack if you wish!

3. What could this opportunity mean for you?

It’s time for some soul-searching. Think about the job opportunity, and why you would be excited if you landed the role. Is this the chance for a change of career? Have you always wanted to work for a company in this particular industry? Think carefully here, because you can use these points to demonstrate your enthusiasm in your thank-you email.

4. Send the thank-you message

Once you’ve completed the previous tasks, it’s time to write a thank-you email to your interviewer. Keep it short and personal, thanking them for their time and mentioning something specific you discussed.

Don’t worry about coming across as too keen. Genuine enthusiasm is a good thing – just make sure your message is professional and doesn’t put pressure on the interviewer for an immediate response.

5. Follow up, again!

It’s been a week since you sent the thank-you email to your interviewer, and you have yet to hear back. It may be time to send a follow-up email.

If the interviewer gave you a timeframe for feedback, wait until that has passed before getting in touch. Otherwise, around five to seven working days is generally a reasonable time to follow up.

In this email, you can politely check in, reiterate your interest in the role and ask if there is anything else you can provide to assist with the process.

And while you wait, keep your job search moving. Until you have received a formal offer, it’s worth continuing to explore other opportunities.
